Pruning Demonstration at Lincoln Park - January 6, 2008

Jim Donoso, Gregg Cook, Gene Albert and Tom Bolden arrive at the Park - ready to prune roses.

Warm and toasty at the beginning - the cold weather and the dampness soon stop the grinning, but they worked steadily to prune each rose bush to its ideal shape.

Mary Scott and Jim Donoso have a brief chat with Jackie about the finer points of pruning ... and cleaning up afterwards.

Jolene Adams demonstrates for a small group of people how to start on a Hybrid Tea.

She is wearing long gloves (Gauntlet Gloves) to protect her hands and arms.

She is clearing out the center of the bush and will begin removing dead and spindly growth.

Gregg Cook works on a Floribunda rose. He will leave it a bit 'bushier' than the Hybrid Teas he pruned earlier.

Deane Coleman is bringing a big bush down to size. This rose was taller than she is when she started, but she is carefully clipping the outer canes at the same hieght all around, and then she will clip the inner canes a bit taller so the bush will be rounded when it leafs out.

Gene Albert is working with Jennifer Beales to finish a border of 'older' roses along the north side of the rose bed.

They have carefully removed canes growing across the center, and trimmed back the side growth to about half the original height of the bush.

Tom Bolden is taking the leaves off the canes and cutting the growth back. He is warm in a hooded jacket and open-finger gloves. The rest of us wish we had that warm jacket ... .

Agnes is using a long pair of loppers to reach down into the bush and clip off stubborn dead canes before she strips off the leaves and cuts back the other growth.

Helen Zawlik-Moyot stops to take a breather as she carefully prunes a row of shrub roses.
